He successfully completed the Navy's rigorous swimming qualification, military training, and parade finishing. He also took part in a challenging 8-hour orienteering trek across Dartmoor, demonstrating resilience and perseverance. Amidst the demands of military life, Richard's passion for music shone through. At HMS Raleigh, he became the organist for the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches on site, contributing to the spiritual life of the Navy community. This role highlighted his adaptability and ability to balance both physical and creative pursuits during a formative chapter in his life.
